Canada's new Justice Minister

Jody Wilson-Raybould makes history, appointed the first female First Nations Justice Minister in the country's history

Canada has never seen a First Nations woman in the role of Justice Minister. Until now, that is.

The new federal cabinet was sworn in on November 4, and new Liberal MP Jody Wilson-Raybould, a former Crown prosecutor and Regional Chief of the BC Assembly of First Nations, was appointed to the role of Minister of Justice and Attorney General, one of the biggest and higher profile positions in the government.

She’s a first time MP and was elected by a large margin in the riding of Vancouver-Granville.

Wilson-Raybould comes from the We Wai Kai Nation and has been a leader in the First Nations community for many years. She’s considered a “consensus builder,” meaning she works to make sure all voices are heard and that problems are solved through collaboration.

As Justice Minister and Attorney General she’ll be working along with new Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Carolyn Bennett, on tackling the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

The Minister of Justice deals with the administration of Canada’s legal system and the AG is, technically, the chief law officer for the federal government.

Wilson-Raybould’s appointment isn’t the only bit of history that was made on November 4. The new federal cabinet also has gender parity; 50 per cent of Canada’s federal ministers are women and 50 per cent are men. Check out the full list of cabinet ministers here.
