After a seemingly interminable winter, spring has FINALLY arrived! It’s time to swap my winter boots for my rain boots and Converse shoes.
Today I spent the morning planning my vacations for this spring and summer, which will soon be here. What could be better than going out into the wilderness to fish for a few days? For some people, vacation means campsites and tourist attractions in an urban setting, but not me—I generally prefer to “unplug,” tie my hair up in a loose bun and get out of the city with just a few pairs of sweatpants, some provisions and my family to go fishing!
As an Aboriginal person who grew up in an urban environment, I wasn’t always so familiar with the concept of spending holidays in the woods. I didn’t mind the idea, but like most other city kids I’d rather hang out at the local skate park or, for special occasions, go to La Ronde in Montreal, for instance. As I’ve gotten older, I have reconnected with my culture in many ways. Working for my Nation has certainly played an important role. I’ve had the opportunity to meet many inspiring people who are proud of their culture. Over time, I’ve learned how vital it is to practice traditional activities, maintain my culture and, eventually, pass it on to my children to ensure that it lives on.
At the moment, I’m literally counting the days until the next time I can escape to the woods! What about you? What are your vacation plans this year?
