Leaving abuse and starting a new life in the city: a transition guide for women

Violence against women is not a natural or traditional part of any of our cultures, but the effects of colonization have left some communities, homes and relationships toxic and abusive.

One of the most difficult decisions you may have to make in your life, as an Indigenous woman, is to leave an abusive relationship and find a new life in a new city. But sometimes it’s necessary to do so, for yourself and for your children. Making this decision and changing your life significantly is naturally a scary thing; in a new city you may not know anyone or have any idea of where to go for support.
