'Indian' team mascots

'This is a weird, outdated view of what it means to be Native'

BuzzFeed got some Indigenous folks in the US to comment on "Indian” team mascots—the Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians—and the results are pretty funny.

Funny, yes, but also frustrating, because these mascots still exist and plenty of people see no problem in them. An argument for keeping these mascots is that they’re somehow honouring us, which seems pretty silly.

“This is a weird, outdated view of what it means to be Native,” said one interviewee.

“I don’t think it’s honouring us in the least,” said another. “I think it’s hurtful.”

Watch the video here, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

What do you think of these team names, logos and mascots? Are there any Canadian examples you can think of?
