Teaching residential school history to daycare kids is 'about building community and empathy'

A daycare in Vancouver is teaching kids about residential schools. Let’s say that again: a daycare is teaching kids about residential schools.

Inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations, which include making lessons about residential schools for all Canadian kids, caregiver Kristin Webster has gone above and beyond.

The recommendations were geared towards students from kindergarten to grade 12, not kids in preschool, but she made a residential school lesson plan because she believes it’s never too early to start learning about this part of Canada’s history.

"I was not taught about it, and I'm highly offended,” Webster told CBC News.

“And we're doing these children a great disservice if we don't tell them the truth."

She makes sure the lessons are age appropriate. The lesson plan lasts 10 and includes trips to museums to learn about culture, and nature walks.

"I don't want to push my particular agenda on anyone," Webster continued. "But I do think these children need to know their country, where they are, and the people who live in it. It's about building community and empathy."
