The RCMP is taking to social media in hopes of tracking down 10 missing Indigenous women.
The police force will be highlighting a number of cases featured on the Canada’s Missing website through its Twitter and Facebook from October 5-14.
This is the third year of the RCMP’s 10-day campaign. A press release noted that the month of October was chosen to coincide with the Sisters in Spirit vigil held by the Native Women’s Association of Canada each October 4.
The RCMP is asking the public to visit canadasmissing.ca to review cases and learn how to submit a tip, “like” the RCMP on Facebook for info about the cases and follow @rcmpgrcpolice on Twitter to see tweets related to the campaign.
Some, who are very close to the issue, find the campaign insensitive.
"I think any sort of efforts to bring awareness about some of our women and girls that are missing is great. I think this campaign, however, is insulting," Leah Gazan told CBC News.
Gazan is a University of Winnipeg professor and an advocate for missing and murdered Indigenous women.
"When you're celebrating 10 dedicated days a year for a limited amount of women I think it's far, far less than a cry for a celebration," she said.
