Another case of appropriation

Acadian singer Natasha St-Pier is facing backlash over a music video filled with First Nations stereotypes

Natasha St-Pier’s new music video is one for the history books. The video for "Tous Les Acadiens" features the Acadian singer donning a feather headdress, surrounded by dreamcatchers and paddling a birch canoe. There are also children dancing around in headdresses to boot.

It's a head scratcher. And while St-Pier’s getting a lot of criticism for bringing in these images and motifs into a music video that has nothing to do with First Nations culture in any way, and doesn’t feature Indigenous people, she’s also getting a lot of questions about why.

She’s also been criticized for misrepresenting Acadian culture, with worries that people who aren’t familiar with Acadians will get an improper reading of what their culture’s about.

Others, though, have defended St-Piers’ video on the grounds of artistic expression. What do you think?
