The Polaris Prize shortlist was revealed today and the amazing, venerable Buffy Sainte-Marie is one of 10 artists or bands that could end up winning the prestigious award!
Every year the Polaris Prize is awarded to a critically acclaimed Canadian album. Music journalists and critics come up with a long list of potential winners, which is eventually pared down to a 10-album short list. This year's winner will be announced in September at an event in Toronto.
Sainte-Marie was nominated for the first time for her latest record, Power in the Blood, an album that has not only received high praise in Canada, but around the world.
She’s facing some serious competition, though. Other Canadian artists like Drake and Caribou have been nominated before. Caribou, an artist who creates stunning electronic music, won back in 2008 for his album Andorra.
Other winners have included Montreal’s Arcade Fire and Toronto-based singer/songwriter Feist.
Last year the incredible Tanya Tagaq took home the prize for her album Animism.
