The Polaris Music Prize is awarded every year to one critically acclaimed Canadian album. Buffy Sainte-Marie's latest, Power in the Blood, is on the shortlist and the veteran singer/songwriter could be taking the prize home when the award is announced on Monday, September 21.
Power in the Blood is an incredible album, daring and big, and quite a departure from what most people would expect from Sainte-Marie. She isn't just the hippie singer, strumming a guitar and singing protest songs, that many might be familiar with. She's a powerhouse. She weaves new beats and sounds into the album and talks about politics, caring for the earth and other important issues.
Not only might this album have opened up listeners' eyes and ears to the new sounds of Buffy Sainte-Marie, but getting nomiated for the Polaris Prize has also opened up Sainte-Marie's eyes to an eclectic and wonderful world of Canadian music she hadn't heard of before.
Sainte-Marie spoke to the Canadian Press recently about the nomination, and about how the Polaris Prize exposed her to new music.
