If you’re a Twitter user, you may have heard of the new #DearNonNatives hashtag.

It surfaced last week with the goal of highlighting Indigenous voices that are overlooked, so regularly, in mainstream North American culture. The hashtag is also meant to combat blatant stereotypes that place Native people in history, sexualize Indigenous women and just don’t get what it means to be Indigenous.

According to Indian Country, @MahpiyaWaciWin started to the trend last Thursday. Just scrolling through the hashtag is fascinating; it’s filled with thoughtful, defiant and very, very proud messages.

Indian Country Today talso compiled 50 provocative #DearNonNatives tweets. Check out the list here.
