Red Rising Magazine launched its second issue last week to a packed house at Winnipeg’s Neechi Commons.
Red Rising is run by volunteers and prioritizes young Indigenous writers, who submit articles, stories and poetry for publication.
It’s an Indigneous magazine from Winnipeg that, according to its website, “is unfiltered, uncensored, and is able to tell a story about what is happening now, and what is about to happen next.”
Submissions are reviewed by a selection committee before making it to the magazine and all submissions are posted on the Red Rising website.
"We want people to realize the value in their voices…It's been heard a lot, 'We want youth to be involved, we want youth to be involved' and this is one of the fastest ways they can be involved," Sadie-Phoenix Lavoie, co-founder of Red Rising Magazine, told CBC News.
"It can be a form of healing for people who submit. It could very well be the first time they've shared some of their stories. And also it's just to know that they're important."
There’s eagerness for stories by and for Indigenous youth — to share them and to read them. To find out more about Red Rising Magazine, visit its website here.
