How many of you still have to endure stories of friendship and generosity between early settlers and Indigenous people as the root of the Thanksgiving holiday?
A lot of people still don’t quite understand that we didn’t eagerly give all of our land and resources to settlers. When you hear stories that our ancestors did this, and did it gratefully, do you take the time to inform people of their misinformation?
Maybe you and your family have reinvented what Thanksgiving means. Harvest, ceremony and gratitude are integral parts of our cultures that we still practice.
The fact that we get a long-weekend to do that is a bonus, but it can be aggravating to know that ignorance that informs racist ideas about us is still out there.
What do you think?
