Winnipeg folk fest may ban headdresses

We know that cultural appropriation isn't okay.

Music festival goers around the world often show up wearing headdresses, without understanding that they are being offensive to Indigenous cultures.

The feathered war bonnet that you see worn on festival grounds are replications of something that holds important traditional and ceremonial value to many Indigenous communities.

Attendees at the Winnipeg Folk Festival asked a woman to remove a headdress she wore to the festival, but she refused. According to media reports she was also wearing face paint.

A photo of the woman made its way around social media and people tweeted at festival organizers with concerns, angry that the headdress would be allowed in the first place.

Now the people who run the Winnipeg Folk Festival are considering banning headdresses.

This move would be in line with other festivals — Bass Coast festival in Squamish, B.C. for example — that have banned that form of cultural appropriation. Also last year, the big Glastonbury festival in the U.K. banned vendors from selling headdresses. It's important that music festivals be inclusidve to everyone, and about the music.

What should we do when we encounter cultural appropriation, like people wearing headdresses at music festivals? How would you respond?
